Both the PS5 Slim ($449-$499) and Xbox Series X ($449-$499) are excellent consoles at similar price points. PS5 wins on exclusive games (Spider-Man, God of War, Final Fantasy), the DualSense controller with haptic feedback, and VR support via PS VR2. Xbox wins on value with Game Pass (hundreds of games for $15/month), backward compatibility with Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games, and better integration with PC gaming. Choose PS5 for exclusives; choose Xbox for the Game Pass library.
The Nintendo Switch OLED ($299-$349) is the best gaming console for kids. It offers family-friendly games like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and Animal Crossing, plus excellent parental controls through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. The portable/TV hybrid design lets kids play anywhere. For budget-conscious families, the Xbox Series S ($249-$299) is also great with Game Pass providing access to hundreds of kid-friendly games for a monthly subscription.
The Nintendo Switch 2 ($399-$449) is worth buying for its significant hardware upgrades: a larger 8-inch LCD screen, more powerful processor for better graphics, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, backward compatibility with Switch 1 games, and a new lineup of exclusive Nintendo titles. If you already own a Switch, the upgrade makes sense for the improved performance and next-gen Nintendo games. If you are new to Nintendo, it is the best entry point into the ecosystem.
The Xbox Series X is the best console for online gaming thanks to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate ($15/month) which includes Xbox Live Gold, EA Play, and cloud gaming. Xbox also has the best cross-platform play support and the Xbox app for PC integration. The PS5 is a close second with PlayStation Plus ($60/year for online play, $120/year for Extra tier with game catalog). For PC gamers who want portability, the Steam Deck OLED ($399-$549) offers access to your existing Steam library on the go.
